Michael J Smellie

A career in the music and media business that extends over 30 years and 5 continents.

His career commenced with the position of Finance Director, Chappell Music Publishing in Sydney in 1980.

Moving to PolyGram Music, Michael held senior Finance positions in Australasia, Brazil and the UK before returning to Sydney as Group Managing Director Polygram Australia in 1987, a position he maintained until 1991.

Having served as Global CEO of the MMA Group, he was appointed as Managing Director for BMG (Bertelsmann Music Group) in Australasia in 1993. Promotion to Senior Vice President of the Asia Pacific region in 1995,based in Hong Kong (and later Tokyo) immersed Michael in a role that involved management of 16 diverse countries from Japan to South Africa including the Middle East and India.

In 2001 he was appointed as COO for BMG Worldwide based in New York.
This role saw Michael's successful management of the global family of companies through several years of major change in the global industry, including the successful structuring of J Records within the BMG group of labels and the successful acquisition of Jive Records.

AS COO he was integral to the negotiation and implementation of the merger between Sony Music and BMG. Michael was appointed COO of Sony BMG in 2004.

 From 2006 to 2008 he was appointed to the position of President, Media Development - Asia Pacific for German media giant Bertelsmann where he established TV and magazine operations in Mainland China.

Michael's belief in the need for Australia to adopt a leadership role for the development and implementation of a creative culture is illustrated by his roles as Chair of The Australian Film, Television & Radio School and chair of Creative Enterprise Australia (a QUT operation).

He is an investor in and board member of several music and electronic media companies that he has helped to establish in Australia and the USA.
